Shop / snuggle sac angel wings knitted throw blanket
The story of Manual Woodworkers & Weavers can be traced back to the entrepreneurial spirit of Thomas Lemuel Oates, who founded the company in 1932. Oates and his brother grew up farming the mountain areas of Bat Cave in western North Carolina, and they would often assist their mother in finding materials for her crafts. The brothers began making wooden whistles, buckets, and birdhouses, which they would sell alongside their mother's crafts to the people from Charlotte who would travel through the area in their horse-drawn buggies on their way to the mountains.
After working at the Ashville Postcard Company, Oates lost his job during the Great Depression. However, this setback inspired him to go into business for himself, selling crafts like cornhusk dolls and woven pieces that were produced by the local women. Utilizing his knowledge of the wholesale business from his time at Ashville, Oates built a waterwheel to generate electricity at a mill, began manufacturing products, and opened a shop.
Over the years, Oates expanded the company, and his son, Lemuel Oates, who would later manage the business, recalls working in the family enterprise from a young age. Lemuel explains that the products were made from cotton scraps left over from the production of socks, with half-inch circles being looped together to form a variety of items.
Lemuel Oates went on to attend college and eventually settled in Richmond. In December 1973, he returned to Bat Cave and took over the management of the company. In 2007, Lemuel's son Travis and his daughter, Molly Oates Sherrill, assumed control of the business.
Today, Manual Woodworkers & Weavers continues to produce high-quality products, including an inspirational theme fringed tapestry throw. The design features a classically beautiful angel feeding birds and is framed by floral elements, all of which are made in the USA. Customers can search the Manual Woodworkers collection for matching pillows and other decor items to complement the tapestry throw.
